You embark on a weight loss journey which is a struggle at first but over time you find your way, and inevitably you start losing weight.
Those first few months are pure perfection. Jeans that were once too snug become loose, your face slims down, and best part of it all…friends and family could see the difference, too.
But as those lovely months come to an end, everything is at a standstill–those numbers on the scale just won’t seem to budge. And you no longer notice a difference in your clothes even though your nutrition and exercise are on point. So what gives? Well, my friend…you have officially hit a plateau.
Below I will give you some of main reasons to why you’ve stopped losing weight.
- You’re not drinking enough
Unfortunately, when you don’t enough water daily, your body will hold on to every ounce of water you drink instead of flushing it out the way it is meant to. That process is what leads to unwanted weight gain/bloating (yikes!)
I’ve had plenty of people to tell me “Yeah, I drink a lot of water.” and come to find out, they are only drinking a quarter of what they actually need to lose weight. So ask yourself this question–Am I really drinking enough?
To ensure you are hydrating properly, I personally recommend to drink at least a gallon of water daily. But if that is too much for you right now (which chances are, it is)

- Your body is immune to your routine
The worst thing you can do is make your body stick with the same routine even though it’s craving something more. So it may be time to change things up a bit.
If you are used to running/walking 5 miles a day, do yourself a favor by adding in HIIT circuits, ankle weights, or challenge yourself to 2 extra miles. It may be a struggle at first, but it’s exactly what your body needs in order to spike up that metabolism and lose more weight.
- You’re eating too much or not enough
Now, this is a tricky one. I say that because you have to figure out which category you fall in–eating too much or too little.
At the beginning of my weight loss journey (which started out strong, BTW) I lost a good amount of weight. Mind you, I was doing everything on my own…tracking my meals using MyFitnessPal, measuring my food out according to nutritional fact labels, and eating what I thought was best. Well, I’m sure you know that it wasn’t long before I hit my plateau and ended up stuck there for MONTHS.
It wasn’t until I embarked my 21 Day Fix journey (another story for another day 😉) that I realized I was eating too much, and my portion sizes were off the chain..oops! I felt so silly when I found out that slight fix was all I needed to get back on the bandwagon and start losing weight again. And not to mention, I still control my portion sizes to the day!
To some people, eating too much or too little isn’t a big deal. But trust me, it is. When you eat too much (especially carbs and fats)…wait, do I even need to explain this? You overeat. You gain weight. Plain and simple. I know it’s easy to think you are making your body burn fat when you don’t eat enough, but you are doing the opposite. Not eating is the same as not fueling your body of what is needs. And that slows down your metabolism which leads to weight gain also. So find the balance that works best for you and your body.

Being stuck on one is not fun at all but it happens to all of us! You just have to figure out what area you are lacking in, change things up a bit, and VOILA! You will be back to losing weight in no time.
