7 Ways to Stay Motivated on Your Fitness Journey

There’s no doubt about it; This. Journey. Is. Hard. One minute you’re super motivated and the next, you’re eating a pint of ice cream questioning yourself if you would be okay with staying the size you are now. Because let’s face it– you’ve been pulling the opposite sex with the body you have for years now β˜•πŸΈ

But seriously, I know motivation comes and goes a lot throughout this journey, but with trial and error, I have discovered a few things that help to keep me going on those days, weeks, and months I am unmotivated and have the urge to give up. I’m hoping these tips can help you as well 😊

  1. Take plenty of pictures

From experience, I know a lot of people use the scale to track progress which is not a bad thing at all. It only backfires when you start to obsess over those numbers. Sometimes the scale doesn’t move or maybe it will move very slowly but pictures will show those small or large NSV’s (non-scale victories) that the scale won’t display. So to help yourself stay motivated, take plenty of pictures to track your progress instead.

2. Join a fitness group

Fitness groups (whether online or offline) is a great way to stay on track because you will be surrounded by like-minded individuals who share some of the same goals as you. Most online fitness groups are designed to push you towards your goal and help you get back on track when you fall. They also share meal/exercise plans to keep things fresh and new for you which is a huge plus!

3. Take your journey online

This tip may or may not be for you because I know everyone doesn’t like sharing their life with people they don’t know. But before you reject this tip altogether, just hear me out for a second πŸ˜‰ Taking my fitness journey online has helped me in so many ways! I receive SO much support, love, encouragement, and motivation from my fitfam–it’s crazy! Whenever I felt like giving up, they were always there to listen to my rants and say the words needed to get me back on track. And the weirdest thing of it all? My fitfam are all strangers! Yeah I know, shocking right? But it’s true. I have tried sharing my journey on Facebook with high school friends but they were nowhere near as supportive as those “strangers” are. So try it for yourself–you may be surprised by the outcome.

4. Reward yourself often

Remember when I said this journey is hard? Well, don’t make it harder by trying to do things “by the books” or restricting yourself all the time. Doing that will only backfire in the long run. So always remember to reward yourself for hitting your small and large goals every chance you get–you deserve it. A reward doesn’t have to be in the form of a cheat meal all the time, either. You can reward yourself with a new outfit, new fitness gear, a new hairstyle, or maybe some new running shoes. It doesn’t matter what it is as long as it is enough to keep you motivated and on track.

5. Create realistic, small goals

I will cut to the chase– wanting to lose 30lbs in 2 months is not a realistic goal. Of course, with loads of cardio it’s possible, but the chances of that actually happening (unless you are considered obese/mobidly obese) is very slim. And plus, losing that much weight in a short amount of time is unhealthy. So beware of setting extreme, unrealistic goals because it is only a setup for disappointment and failure.
Small goals such as exercising 3 days a week for 30 minutes is more realistic and attainable. It sounds like an irrelevant goal but overtime it will lead you to the bigger picture. Here are a few more examples of realistic goals:

  • “I will drink 80oz of water daily.”
  • “I will eat 5 servings of vegetables every day.”
  • “I will walk 10,000 steps each day.”

6. Use a journal

Along with taking progress pictures, keeping track on your progress in a training log or journal is a great option for myself and many others. It’s something about seeing numbers/data that keeps people motivated. In your journal, you can track what you eat in a day, what exercise you are doing, how many miles you ran, how much weight/inches you lost, the amount of water you’re drinking, and more.
Keeping tabs on all you are doing will keep you accountable, and accountability is half the battle when it comes to seeing results.

7. Don’t compare yourself to others

Comparing your journey to others is a surefire way to fall off track and hinder your results. Trust me, I know! I have compared myself to other people who started their journey around the time I did PLENTY of times and it always left me feeling unhappy, unworthy, and unmotivated. So don’t do it to yourself–it’s so not worth the time or energy.
It’s your journey for a reason and is not meant to look like anyone else’s. Just because your friend is making more progress than you doesn’t mean you are not working hard enough. It doesn’t mean you should question all the work you have put in either. It just means that you are two different people with different bodies and different goals.

Whenever you are about to compare yourself, try to remember everything you read above.

    Great ideas for motivation; especially number five, nothing motivates me more than success so by setting small attainable goals I’m definitely setting myself up for success and therefore motivating myself to continue.
